We’re still a month away from the end of the school year and the family vacation season beginning on Hilton Head Island. But just because the calendar says it’s only early May that doesn’t mean that it’s not a good time to vacation in the South Carolina lowcountry. In fact, with temperatures in the 80′s (and not the blazing hot upper 90′s we’ve had during the summer months for the past few years) it’s a great time for active outdoor activities. And the month of May includes great annual events including the Rib Burnoff and Barbecuefest, Taste of Summer Craft Beer Festival, Bluffton Village Festival (Mayfest), and the kickoff of Harbourfest.
Aside from these events there’s plenty of other things to do and see on the island. With school still in session our focus this month is geared towards activities that you might not normally try if you were vacationing with younger children followed by a list of some of the more popular scheduled events in the area.
If you like a bit of excitement there’s a new zip line attraction on the Island. That’s right – glide through the treetops and over the marshes at heights of up to 75 feet in the air. You can ride a single line or take the full tour of 8 zip lines. The full tour takes about two and a half hours and includes 8 zip lines, suspended sky bridges and an aerial staircase.
For more heart pounding adventure you can head down to the beaches and try your hand at parasailing or windsurfing. If you prefer your water activities a bit more relaxed then taking a canoe or kayak tour through the lagoons of Palmetto Dunes is an incredible experience that you will never forget. Explore yourself or take the full tour with Hilton Head Outfitters.
Of course, golf and tennis are always in season on Hilton Head. But if you happen to be here and get rained out for the day there are still many things to do in the area. Many people head acrosss the bridge to Bluffton and hit the Tanger Outlet stores. But if you’re in the mood for shopping don’t forget some of the quaint shops and markets in Shelter Cove, Sea Pines, and Coligny Plaza. For a day of total relaxation treat yourself to one of the many day spas in the area.
