Sea Pines has been the “dreamland” destination of visitors and residents to Hilton Head Island since 1960. Charles Fraser’s vision for Sea Pines was developed after traveling to many resorts during the 1950’s and determining that instead of overpowering the land with buildings and enterprise, a retirement, resort, residential development could be created where humans and the natural environment dwell in harmony and as a result the genius of the term “eco-friendly” or “environmentally sensitive” development. As a result of Charles leading this idea of development with land use covenants that provide environmental protection Hilton Head Island has experienced controlled growth and even today the success of his vision continues to be observed by all who live here and visit.
