The Top 10 Memories of an Old Timer was submitted by Edward "Ned" McNair and taken from his book "Morning At The Beach".
1. Shucking and eating oysters over a plywood table, near a roaring fire, at sunset, on the Beach.
2. Watching Charles Fraser, Robert Marvin, and a very few others define what Hilton Head would be to and do for those of us who live and visit here.
3. Arnold Palmer winning the first PGA tournament at Harbour Town in front of an unfinished Lighthouse. His first win in 5 years.
4. Sailing on Calibogue Sound with out another boat in sight.
5. Raymond Enslow wearing a six shooter on his hip to fight off the alligators as he and his crew built the board walks through the Sea Pines Forest Preserve.
6. The opening of the first golf course on Hilton Head. It was 9 holes and doubled the value of all lots and planned lots on the island.
7. 95 lb., red headed Danna Dunbar, from Savannah, landing her fabric covered airplane on the beach in order to court her future husband Stewart, who’s family was developing Palmetto Bay marina back in the 60’s. (Stewart has since died and Dana is remarried).
8. The time Charles Fraser built 2 tennis courts so deep in the woods in Sea Pines that no breeze could reach them and concluded from the lack of play that Tennis was not going to mean much to the resort. At 90 degrees and 80 % humidity he was right. Fortunately he hired some younger men who convinced him to build a major tennis facility out in the open.
9. When Doug Corken surveyed some future water front lot sites in Sea Pines in the late 60’s an announced they may be worth $10,000 some day.
10. The June day in the early 70’s when a barge hit the old swing bridge and shut down automobile traffic to the island at the beginning of tourist season. 2 ferries were hired and every employee of the Sea Pines Company became porters and used their personal cars as taxies.
